Get about north Edinburgh more easily
walk, wheel, or cycle
Who is NEAT?
North Edinburgh Active Travel is a group of local organisations that want to enable local people to get about more easily and feel safe doing so. We are very aware that the majority of people in the area don’t have access to a car and therefore rely on active travel or public transport to get where they need to go.
We are delivering activities that enable local residents to develop skills and confidence in walking and cycling. We also recognise the need to improve the environment and how safe residents feel so that they walk and cycle more. Current developments on Pennywell Road, West Pilton Park and the Waterfront give us the opportunity to do this.
NEAT is a working group of R2, a network of organisations in north Edinburgh committed to working collaboratively to achieve the best outcomes for people in the area.
NEAT is funded by The City of Edinburgh Council as part of their work developing a new cycle path and park on Pennywell Road.

Why NEAT?
DOWNLOADS
The City of Edinburgh Council are developing a new cycle path on Pennywell Road. They know that building new off road cycle paths helps people want to walk and cycle more, but they also know that other things need to happen too.
With the local knowledge and connections that the organisations involved with NEAT have, we have come up with a plan to deliver some of the other things that will help people walk and cycle more – and enjoy all that north Edinburgh has to offer.
Over this first year we have started
– Offering free bike checks and basic maintenance
– Offering training to walk and cycle ride leaders
– Offering bike maintenance classes
– Developing a library of local walk and cycle rides
– Supporting walking groups – including walk with a benefits advisor
– Developing a map
We also continued to talk to the Council and other developers about changes in the area. To support local voices in this we
– Have made a short film about how it is to get around in north Edinburgh
– Will be taking local politicians and other decision makers for walk around the area to talk to them about local issues
Keep an eye on the calendar and the R2 facebook page for activities that are happening in the area.

When the NEAT Connections project team began engaging with people in the North Edinburgh area, we realised that the community action plan should cover a wider area than just the roads that will be changed.
The NEAT Community Action Plan covers the area from Granton Road to Muirhouse Gardens, and from the Seafront to Ferry Road and Telford road – including Granton, Pilton, Muirhouse and Drylaw.
This is referenced in the local improvement plan as the North Edinburgh Small Area.
The map below shows the area covered by the NEAT Community Action Plan in red, the area covered by the NEAT Connections project in blue, and the core route that NEAT Connections is focussed on in yellow.

Action Plan Report
Detailing the engagement that took place, what we found, and how this information was used to develop the action plan.
We are in regular contact with the team and want to contribute local residents thoughts throughout the design process.
This work with local communities started in 2020 when Sustrans led the development of a local community action plan after having spoken to local people and organisations. This is the report which details what Sustrans heard from local people, and this is the Community Action Plan.
